Mike Flanaganโs Carrie series is now one step closer to our screens. The horror auteur himself just announced in a new Instagram post that filming on the series has begun, featuring Summer H. Howell as the latest young actress to take on the mantle of Stephen Kingโs first protagonist.
The update isnโt much, just a picture of the seriesโ day one slate, paired with the caption โand weโre off.โ It does, however, confirm that Michael Fimognari will once again collaborate with Flanagan as cinematographer on the series, having previously worked on Oculus, Before I Wake, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Doctor Sleep, Geraldโs Game, The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, The Fall of the House of Usher, and The Midnight Club.
Alongside Howell as Carrie White, the series is set to star Siena Adugong as Sue Snell, along with Matthew Lillard, Amber Midthunder, Samantha Sloyan, Alison Thornton, Thalia Dudek, Josie Totah, Arthur Conti, and Joel Oulette. According to Lillard, the series is going to update Kingโs seminal novel for a modern audience:
โSo, it's Stephen King's first published book, it has gone through all these iterations. I think the exciting thing here is that Mike has found a way to make it relevant right now, and I think that it speaks to what we're all experiencing, and so I think that that's going to make a difference.โ
Originally published in 1974, Carrie was Kingโs first novel, which was made into a film just two years later. Directed by Brian de Palma and starring scream queen Sissy Spacek, the adaptation was an instant hit, even if it changed some aspects of the novel (including Carrieโs weight), and is largely considered the best adaptation of the novel to date. A sequel, The Rage: Carrie 2, was released in 1999 to dismal reviews and even worse box office numbers, and a new version of the novel was also made in 2013, starring Chloรซ Grace Moretz as Carrie White.
Mike Flanaganโs Carrie series has not yet set a release date.
