Sarah Michelle Gellar may not be leading the upcoming Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, but that doesn't mean she's taking a hands off approach – far from it, in fact, as demonstrated in a new interview with Vanity Fair.

The Chosen Slayer this time around will be played by Ryan Kiera Armstong, who stars in the Buffy reboot series directed and produced by Oscar winner Chloรฉ Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals). Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman (Poker Face) are attached to write, showrun, and executive produce. As well as executive producing, original series lead Gellar is reprising her titular role as a recurring guest star.

While there's no additional casting news that hints towards any other stars of the original show coming back, in the new interview with VF Italia, Gellar dishes that she wants the new series to take a lighter tone, as well as bring back some fan favorites who met their end in the series:

โ€œIt will be lighter than the last few seasons of the original. We will try to find a balance between new and old characters. My dream is to bring back everyone who has died, but space will have to be made for new stories as well.”

In a vampire show like Buffy, no shortage of beloved characters met a grisly fate, and if Gellar's words are anything to go by, we could see the return of anyone from Cordelia Chase (Charisma Carpenter) to Tara Maclay (Amber Benson).

Look out for more on Untitled Buffyverse Pilot as we get it!
