A new batch of Mogwai are reportedly coming to terrorize the big screen, with Deadline reporting today that a new Gremlins movie may be in the works from Christopher Columbus and Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group.
The new Gremlins movie would be the first since the 1990 sequel Gremlins: The New Batch, and follows two seasons of an animated prequel series Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai and last year's Gremlins: The Wild Batch.
Deadline's report doesn't reveal much, only that Warner Bros. have:
Franchise hopes abound down the road in Lord of the Rings The Hunt for Gollum, Practical Magic 2, DC’s Clayface and Supergirl, Drew Goddard’s incoming script for a new Matrix, a new Gremlins from Christopher Columbus and a Goonies treatment.
Columbus, who wrote the original Joe Dante-directed 1984 classic Gremlins, has been linked to a third Gremlins movie since 2017.
In a 2017 interview with ScreenRant, Columbus shared further details about the potential new Gremlins movie:
“I’m really proud of the script […] It is as twisted and dark as anything, so we’ll see. It’s always a budgetary conversation when we’re going to shoot it. I wanted to go back to the really twisted sensibility of the first movie. I found that was a very easy place for me to fall back into and start writing again so hopefully we’ll see that movie soon.”
Also said to be involved in this iteration of Gremlins 3 was Carl Ellsworth, who wrote Wes Craven’s airborne thriller Red Eye and co-scripted the Last House on the Left remake for Craven. In our 2020 interview with Ellsworth, he expands that the potential movie:
“…was thought of as a direct sequel mostly to the first film—not discounting the second one by any stretch, but I saw it as very much a passing-the-baton story, staying in the tone of the original. I think that helped get me the job: I said, ‘Yeah, there’s a lot of humor in the movie, helped by the classic Jerry Goldsmith score that gives us a license to laugh, but it’s first and foremost a horror movie.’
Whether or not Warner Bros. alleged new Gremlins movie is the fabled Gremlins 3 detailed above remains to be seen, but rest assured we will bring you any news as it rolls in.
