Jurassic World Rebirth - Universal Pictures

Despite some major competition from the so-called man of steel, Jurassic World Rebirth continued its impressive run at the box office. After opening to $322 million globally over Fourth of July weekend, director Gareth Edwardsโ€™ seventh entry in the long-running dino-centric franchise held its own on its second weekend. In particular, audiences outside of the U.S. continued to flock to see these prehistoric creatures on the silver screen. So much so that itโ€™s already one of the biggest movies of 2025 overall, with plenty of gas left in the tank.

Rebirth pulled in $40.3 million domestically in its second weekend, while adding another mighty impressive $68 million overseas. That brings its new running total to $530 million globally after less than two full weeks in theaters. That makes it the sixth-biggest movie of the year so far globally, trailing How to Train Your Dragon and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, both of which it will pass before long.

All of this while Superman opened to an estimated $220 million globally, which includes $125 million domestically. So yes, that led to a 56% drop for Rebirth compared to its opening weekend. That may seem steep but in the heart of the summer season when itโ€™s blockbuster after blockbuster, if a movie can manage to drop less than 60% on weekend two after a healthy opening, thatโ€™s a win.

But the big key for Rebirth is the international numbers. Itโ€™s worth remembering that overseas audiences are what helped push the movie to well over $300 million worldwide over its first handful of days in theaters, with China and other countries turning out in droves. This movieโ€™s international figure is well over 50%, whereas Supermanโ€™s is under 50% after opening weekend. This is one of those moments where the importance of the global theatrical marketplace comes into play. Itโ€™s not all about the U.S., despite the often heavy emphasis on domestic ticket sales.

The film serves as a bit of a reset after 2022โ€™s Dominion, which wrapped up the previous trilogy on a down note critically, earning the worst reviews in the history of the franchise. So, Universal brought in a new director and a new cast, led by Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Mahershala Ali (Moonlight), Rupert Friend (Obi-Wan Kenobi), and Jonathan Bailey (Wicked). That has proved to be a winning formula.

Itโ€™s a reminder that general audiences around the world love these movies. Yes, they love dinosaurs but for whatever reason, Universal and Jurassic have all but developed a monopoly on prehistoric creatures as a cinematic concern. Stuff like 65 comes around every so often and never seems to break through. So, when people want a dino fix, this is where they turn. Dinosaurs are a universal language, which is part of why the global appeal is so strong. Itโ€™s a good business to be in.

At this point, itโ€™s really more of a question of when – not if – Universal announces another sequel. That opens up the question of what that will look like. Are they going to play it safe and make a more direct sequel to Rebirth? Not to get into spoilers here but the movie very much had an ending without setting up a storyline for the next outing. They could also do another standalone adventure of sorts, or perhaps use the next movie to truly launch a new trilogy. Time will tell, but itโ€™s evident the demand is there.
