Top Horror Movies Streaming This Week

It was a foregone conclusion what film would be number one this week. Ryan Coogler's first horror film, and a period piece with vampires who not only lust for blood but also the soul of music, had to be number one. It's gorgeous with its spectacular cinematography, stylish costumes, and the brilliant performances of Michael B. Jordan, in a dual role, Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O'Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, and Delroy Lindo.

It has so much going for it that it sold out massive amounts of IMAX screenings, which are much more expensive, and now, since it has come to streaming, it's clear that fans want to savor it's beauty and bloodletting.

Sinners is now streaming on HBO Max.

Powerful filmmaking that takes the ideas of such horror films as Day of the Triffids and George Romero's Living Dead series and makes something new and entirely terrifying is what sets 28 Days Later apart. After its release, the film continued to influence the genre in many ways, especially a fan favorite television series that you should remember. 

Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris, Christopher Eccleston, Megan Burns, and Brendan Gleeson star as the resilent survivors who fight against hordes of rage virus victims and keep their humanity while others do not.

28 Days Later is now streaming on AMC+ and Pluto TV.

The power of a new film in a respected horror series is a powerful one, as 28 Weeks Later keeps running to the top ten for the third week in a row, and it's no wonder why.  Robert Carlyle, Rose Byrne, Jeremy Renner, Harold Perrineau, Catherine McCormack, Mackintosh Muggleton, Imogen Poots, and Idris Elba star in Juan Carlos Fresnadillo's inventive sequel to the original classic.

When NATO allies attempt to resettle England after the outbreak and evacuation, it's the little choices that people make that seal their doom.

28 Weeks Later is now streaming on Hulu.

While this film was not Steven Spielberg's debut film, that honor goes to the tense chiller Duel, Spielberg showed the world exactly how talented he is when he made one of the highest-grossing films in history despite many challenges, not the least of which was the recalcitrant shark, Bruce.

In the year of the film's 50th anniversary, streaming services have wisely brought the film back for all to enjoy. While Jaws will be leaving Peacock in six days, it will return on July 15 with all three of its sequels on Netflix.

One of 2024's most visually ravishing films is holding its own with the combined talents of director Robert Eggers and the stellar cast of Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, and Willem Dafoe.

A passion project for Eggers, it took him 15 years to get the film into theaters, but it was well worth the wait. The cinematography by Jarin Blaschke gives the simple story of the film, lifted from the Bram Stoker classic “Dracula,” a grandeur that is hard to shake.

Nosferatu is now streaming on Prime.

Okay, so The Substance has a truly admirable staying power. Visually stunning, with beautiful men and women, surrounded by the people who want to possess them and drink of their youth with their eyes or through the very strange power of a system that promises you everything you could ever want, but at a costly price.

But the most daring things in Coralie Fargeat's smashingly popular second film are the performances of Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley, and Dennis Quaid. While the film is body horror, it also has a comedic aspect that makes you laugh while you are feeling disgust or sadness at the ruin of beautiful things.

The Substance is now streaming on Mubi.

Spanish American director Jaume Collet-Serra has a hit on streaming with The Woman in the Yard. The striking image of the veiled woman simply waiting outside a home is hard to shake. Danielle Deadwyler, Okwui Okpokwasili, Peyton Jackson, and Russell Hornsby star in this eerie mystery.

The question is, what does the Woman in Black want? The film's terrifying trail to that answer is quite a journey.

Another film that has some staying power mid-year in the top ten is Steven Soderbergh's quietly disturbing ghost story. While the film doesn't have bloody violence, it is the human relationships and the shocking reveal that catch your mind's eye as you float through the film like a supernatural presence yourself.

One of the most interesting things about the film is its perspective that lends itself to the audience relating to the apparition. It stars Lucy Liu, Chris Sullivan, Callina Liang, Eddy Maday, West Mulholland, and Julia Fox.

Presence is now streaming on Hulu.

Sophie Thatcher, who broke out in Yellowjackets and has haunted the top ten in Heretic, has returned to the list with her other film in 2025, Companion.  This unsettling meditation on relationships and artificial intelligence prompts thought-provoking consideration of human greed versus robots that lack emotional capacity.

What's worse? Someone who wants what you have so badly that they would do anything to get it, or a robot who just wants to survive?

Companion is now streaming on HBO Max.

Director Adam Egypt Mortimer created this trippy ode to male friendship and madness. Miles Robbins, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Sasha Lane, and Mary Stuart Masterson star in this 2019 film that jumped straight into the top ten once it hit Prime and fans were able to rediscover it.

A troubled college freshman, Luke, suffers a violent family trauma. He then resurrects his charismatic childhood imaginary friend Daniel to help him cope, not realizing how dangerous Daniel is.

Daniel Isn't Real is now streaming on Prime.
