Josh Brolin in DUNE

Josh Brolin is in talks to star in 20th Centuryโ€™s Whalefall from No One Will Save You director Brian Duffield, Deadline reports today.

The No Country for Old Men and Dune star joins Austin Abrams, also set to lead Zach Cregger's upcoming Resident Evil movie in an as-of-now unannounced role, who was previously cast as the lead in the adaptation of Daniel Kraus' novel of the same name.

Described as โ€œThe Martian meets 127 Hoursโ€, Whalefall centers on:

โ€ฆa scuba diver in search of his deceased fatherโ€™s remains who gets swallowed by an 80-foot, 60-ton sperm whale and has only one hour to escape before his oxygen runs out. After giving up on life, the young man is surprised to find a reason to live in the most dangerous and unlikely of places.

While not confirmed, it's pretty safe to assume that Brolin will be playing the role of said father, known as Mitt Gardiner in the novel.

Whalefall marks a reunion between Abrams and Brolin, who can both be seen this summer in Zach Cregger's Weapons.

Released in 2023, Kraus' Whalefall received critical acclaim and was included in a list of the โ€œBest Thrillers of 2023โ€ by the New York Times.

Imagine Entertainmentโ€™s Brian Grazer, Jeb Brody and Allan Mandelbaum are producing Whalefall, with Duffield also producing. 20th Century took Whalefall rights after a โ€œcompetitiveโ€ bidding war.

Look out for more on Whalefall as we get it.
