The I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot slashes into theaters on July 18, and today brings a first look at stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. reprising their iconic roles from the 1997 original.
People has debuted some exclusive images of the slasher sequel, as well as a chat with director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge), who teases that I Know What You Did Last Summer is a “really fun, popcorn summer event,” but doesn't skimp on the “brutal” kills.
Starring alongside Hewitt and Prinze Jr., who'll once again play Julie James and Ray Bronson respectively, are Jonah Hauer-King, Madelyn Cline, Alexander Chavez, Lola Tung, Tyriq Withers, and Chase Sui Wonders.
When five friends inadvertently cause a deadly car accident, they cover up their involvement and make a pact to keep it a secret rather than face the consequences. A year later, their past comes back to haunt them and theyโre forced to confront a horrifying truth: someone knows what they did last summerโฆand is hell-bent on revenge. As one by one the friends are stalked by a killer, they discover this has happened before, and they turn to two survivors of the legendary Southport Massacre of 1997 for help.
People also bring some choice quotes from the cast, with Hewitt detailing the throwback vibes that the IKWYDLS legacy sequel promises:
There's lots of '90s in there, so get excited because the '90s are back again! […] And there's lots of twists and turns. I don't think people are going to expect anything that's coming. It's a really fun ride.”
Robinson directed from a script co-written by her and Sam Lansky, with Leah McKendrick (M.F.A.) writing the original draft of the screenplay.
