TWILIGHT

Good news, Twihards – time to dust off those Team Jacob tees and bust out your old copy of New Moon, as the Twilight animated series ordered at Netflix from Lionsgate Television is officially moving forward.

Deadline, who reported the news earlier today, reveal that Sinead Daly (The Walking Dead: The World Beyond, Tell Me Lies) will write and executive produce the adaptation of the 2020 Twilight companion novel Midnight Sun from series creator Stephenie Meyer, which is a retelling of Twilight from the perspective of vampire Edward Cullen.

Meyer will also executive produce the series.

Back in 2008, Robert Pattinson (who played Cullen in the Twilight film series) used the then-unfinished Midnight Sun manuscript to form his performance as the moody bloodsucker.

Just in case you were living under a rock for the entirety of the 2000s, the Twilight series (both book and film) was a gargantuan global success, with five movies in its multi-billion-dollar film franchise starring Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner. Readers and viewers around the world were gripped by the love triangle between human Bella Swan (Stewart), vampire Edward Cullen (Pattinson) and werewolf Jacob Black (Lautner).

Back in March, Michael Burns, vice chairman of Lionsgate, shared the news of the show during a Q&A at the Morgan Stanley media conference, revealing, โ€˜Weโ€™re going to go out with the โ€˜Twilightโ€™ series, an animated series, I think thereโ€™ll be a lot of interest in that.โ€™โ€

We can't imagine he's wrong, given the vicelike grip that Twilight had on the world for a good majority of the early aughts. Given that we're in a seemingly constant Y2K renaissance, there seems no better time to bring Bella and Edward back in a new way.

The question remains, what does an animated Twilight look like? Will the animators opt for an eclectic anime style of drawing? Or something more in tune with the story's gothic sensibilities – some TheNightmare Before Christmas-esque stop motion, perhaps? Either way we'll be checking it out.

We'll bring you all the updates on Twilight‘s animated series – including voice cast and release date – as they roll in.
