It's a mix of old and new favorites this week, with the top horror movies on streaming list. For fans of the somewhat neglected monsters, like vampires and werewolves, you have a bonanza of great films to watch and re-watch, if you would like. Gothic horror and period horror films are also having their time in the moonlight, which is excellent. As it happens, there is more than one gothic period horror film on the list, so we're talking about a trend on the upswing.
New to the list this week is Until Dawn, the adaptation of the popular survival horror video game, and the horror comedy Death of a Unicorn. Species, the monster movie from 1995, has popped into the top ten after coming to MGM+. The film may have risen on the charts as a tribute to Michael Madsen, who tragically passed away recently, as fans revisit his films, as he is part of the impressive ensemble cast of Species.

Sinners - Streaming on HBO Max
Image Credit: IMDB Vampires are definitely hot right now, and Ryan Coogler's newest film is leading the charge with some of the most vicious yet charismatic bloodsuckers that we've seen in a while on the big screen. They couldn't miss with this cast: Michael B. Jordan, Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O'Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, and Delroy Lindo.
Made with such passion, it sent cinephiles to multiple screenings at IMAX theaters and seems to only expanding the number of home viewers watching the film since it has been in the top spot for four weeks in a row. It didn't hurt that it is a period film with such great music, authentic period clothing, beautiful cinematography, and brilliant direction.
Sinners is now streaming on HBO Max.
Until Dawn - Streaming on Netflix
Image Credit: IMDB This survival horror film, based on the video game of the same name, was released on streaming on July 24 and has wasted no time in becoming one of the most-watched new movies of the week. In it, Clover and her friends become stuck in a strange town and a time loop as they search for Clover's missing sister.
Ella Rubin,ย Michael Cimino,ย Odessa A'zion,ย Ji-young Yoo, andย Belmont Cameli star in the film that is directed by David F. Sandberg (Lights Out, Annabelle: Creation). Imagine being stuck with a killer, and you find yourself fighting to stay alive again, with every new day.
Until Dawn is now streaming on Netflix.
Death of a Unicornย - Streaming on HBO Max
Image Credit: IMDB It's been a while since there were quite so many horror comedies, but Death of a Unicorn is here to bring more humor to your horror viewing. Who doesn't love a good laugh while you are being scared? A father and daughter have a shocking encounter with a young unicorn, which leads to the realization that unicorns can be quite dangerous.
Paul Rudd,ย Jenna Ortega, Will Poulter,ย Tรฉa Leoni, andย Richard E. Grant star in the directorial debut of Alex Scharfman.
Death of a Unicorn is now streaming on HBO Max.
Speciesย - Streaming on MGM+
Image Credit: IMDB It is good to see that a lot of new films are hitting the top ten, but it's always gratifying to see a film from the past resurface on the streaming list. Species, a film from 1995, is currently available on MGM+ and has garnered a lot of interest from fans at home. It is the story of scientists and government agents who attempt to recapture a human-alien hybrid, in the form of the gorgeous Natasha Henstridge, before she succeeds in mating.
This movie is packed with star power with Ben Kingsley,ย Michael Madsen,ย Alfred Molina,ย Forest Whitaker,ย Marg Helgenberger, and is an early role for acclaimed actress Michelle Williams as young Sil.
Speciesย isย now streaming on MGM+.
28 Days Later - Streaming on Pluto TV
Image Credit: IMDB Danny Boyle's runaway hit from 2002 continues to leave its mark since it has become readily available on streaming. The film, written by Alex Garland, was inspired by George Romero's zombie films, but Boyle is careful to note that the flesh-eating victims of the rage virus are still alive. The virus itself is considered to be a magnification of the psychological aggression in human beings, like road rage.
While the rage virus victims are scary, a big part of the success of the film comes from the emotional connections between the characters and the performances of the film's stars Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris,ย Christopher Eccleston,ย Megan Burns, andย Brendan Gleeson.
I Know What You Did Last Summerย - Streaming on MGM+
Image Credit: IMDB There's nothing like a good summer slasher to help you while away the hours on sunny days. Made in 1997, the writer Kevin Williamson, best known forย Scream,ย wrote it as a throwback to 80s horror films and made great use of the urban myth of “The Hook” while adapting the book on which it is based. People loved the movie then and still love it now as a cherished classic.
Jennifer Love Hewitt,ย Sarah Michelle Gellar,ย Ryan Phillippe, Freddie Prinze Jr., Johnny Galecki,ย Bridgette Wilson,ย Anne Heche, andย Muse Watson star in the film that was part of the slasher resurgence of the 90s.
I Know What You Did Last Summer is now streaming on MGM+.
The Substance - Streaming on Mubi
Image Credit: IMDB One of the burgeoning film distributors, Mubi, really made waves with this satirical, body horror film that hits you in the gut and the funnybone. With a career-best performance from the unfairly underrated star Demi Moore and equally engaging turns from Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid, French director Coralie Fargeat caused even more of a sensation than she did with her debut film, Revenge.
From a film that oozes style, as well as an icky green liquid that makes your dream of eternal youth come true, or does it, it's not just eye candy, although there is plenty of that on hand. It's the stinging critique of beauty standards that causes women and men to do whatever it takes to stay young and beautiful, at any cost.
Theย Substanceย isย now streaming on Mubi.
Nosferatu - Streaming on Prime
Image Credit: IMDB More vampires! For fans of the undead, the news that Robert Eggers was finally ready to make his version of Nosferatuย was welcomed by those who enjoy the director's films but also by intrigued, scary movie fans. This gothic horror film was a real feast for the eyes and all of your other senses. It is a period film, the second on the list, that still feels fresh to modern audiences. It's not the last either.
The intense performances from the cast, which includes Bill Skarsgรฅrd,ย Nicholas Hoult,ย Lily-Rose Depp,ย Aaron Taylor-Johnson,ย Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, and Willem Dafoe, give an extra emotional dimension to the film that is very welcome. Simon McBurney, who plays the film's Renfield, is another standout.
Nosferatuย is now streaming on Prime.
The Cursed (2021) - Streaming on Netflix
Image Credit: IMDB There aren't nearly enough werewolf movies in horror, as the cycles of popularity among the genre's monsters ebbs and flows. If you are one of the people clamoring for more good werewolf films, you are in luck.ย The Cursed, formerly known asย Eight for Silver,ย is not only a well-made period gothic horror film but an intriguing twist on monstrous myth. Since the movie was added to Netflix, many more people have been able to watch it, and that's a good thing.
The film has genuinely disturbing sequences with fantastic performances from Boyd Holbrook,ย Kelly Reilly,ย Alistair Petrie, and, in particular, Roxane Duran, who does exceptionally well in a small role.
The Cursed is now streaming on Netflix.
Opusย - Streaming on HBO Max
Image Credit: IMDB In general, there is a feeling that there aren't quite enough comedies in cinema, so leave it to horror to bring back comedy in a big way.ย Opus, written and directed by Mark Anthony Green, is his first feature film, and as a former journalist, he knows the satirical barbs that he launches at the media and legacy journalism. Ayo Edebiri,ย John Malkovich,ย Juliette Lewis,ย Murray Bartlett,ย Amber Midthunder,ย Tatanka Means, and Young Mazino star in the film as unwary media stars who have been called to a reclusive rock star's desert listening party.
Malkovich is wild as the rock star who has shocking plans for the reporters and editors he has known for his entire career under a calm demeanor. Don't worry, there's some hilariously gruesome gore to be had in this poison pen letter to society and journalism.
Opus is now streaming on HBO Max.
