Following a release date reveal of September 25 and some terrifying new gameplay footage out of PlayStation's State of Play last week, Konami has unveiled a new look at Silent Hill f that teases a “distinctly Japanese” horror experience.

Silent Hill f is developed  by Taiwanese company NeoBards Entertainment, with a story by writer Ryukishi07 (When They Cry) and artist Kera (Spirit Hunter NG) handling creature and character design. Storied Silent Hill composer returns for music duties, along with Kensuke Inage and previous Ryukishi07 collaborators Dai and Xaki.

The survival horror marks the eighth mainline game in the Silent Hill series  which started in 1999 with the eponymous first game, and most recently saw Bloober Team's remake of Silent Hill 2.

Set in 1960s Japan , Silent Hill f follows a young girl named Hinako Shimizu, whose town of Ebisugaoka is suddenly shrouded in fog and begins to change in a horrific way:

Now, she must explore a town she no longer recognizes while solving puzzles, fighting strange enemies, and doing everything she can to survive in order to face the ultimate decision that she must make. This is a tale about a beautiful yet terrifying choice.

Specific plot details are still under wraps, but the fan theories have already started rolling in thanks to extra character and monster information on Konami's website. Speaking in today's new developer diary, producer Motoi Okamoto explains more on how Silent Hill f was developed as a way to bring the essence of Japanese horror back to a franchise that had become overtly Westernized, with NeoBards Game Director Al Wang commenting on returning to the series roots, and “…not merely copy, but really understand what the key atmospheric elements that defined the classic Silent Hill titles were in order to evolve them for Silent Hill f.โ€

Konami has confirmed that Silent Hill f is an entirely original story in the Silent Hill series, meaning fans do not have to have played any of the previous games to enjoy or understand the experience (although we imagine there will be plenty of references and easter eggs for veteran players to spot, too).

Silent Hill f  will be available from September 25 on PlayStation 5,Windows and Xbox Series X/S, and can be added to Wishlist via Steam. UK fans can also pre-order a grisly SteelBook exclusive right here. For more gaming goodness, here's what we learned from our sneak peek at Resident Evil Requiem.
