Naughty Dog has unleashed a new update for The Last of Us Part II Remastered that lets gamers play through Ellie and Abby's stories in chronological order for the first time.

Previously in the 2020 action-horror game, the vengeance sagas of Ellie and Abby are told non-linearly over the course of three days as the pair reckon with the fungus zombies of the apocalypse, militia and religious cults. The new chronological order was developed in order to give players a chance to explore both of their motivations, experiences and emotions in an all-new way.

Per an official announcement on the PlayStation blog:

Through the new Chronological mode, we believe players will gain even deeper insight into Part IIโ€™s narrative. Players will be able to see how Ellie being gifted a guitar flows so neatly into her learning to play, for example, while the journey through Seattle will showcase the fascinating parallels between Ellie and Abbyโ€™s crisscrossing journeys. Youโ€™ll see just how close they come into running into each other, how their actions impact each other, and more.

In addition to new trophies tied to completing the narrative experience in chronological order, the new The Last of Us Part II Remastered update also gives fans a chance to unlock two new skins, with Joel dressed as Nathan Drake and Tommy as Sam Drake from Naughty Dog's Uncharted series in No Return, Part II Remasteredโ€™s survival mode.

This update follows the recent news that HBO's The Last of Us series will diverge from following Ellie (Bella Ramsey) as a main character for the third season, with the focus instead switching to Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) similarly to how it does in the game.

The new update for The Last of Us Part II Remastered is available today on both PS5 (via Patch 2.1.0*) and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store (via Patch 1.5**).
