Having just passed his thirtieth birthday, Hellboy is back for yet another adventure, this time joining up with the B.R.P.D. for a twisty new story. FANGORIA is excited to partner with Dark Horse Comics to reveal exclusive preview pages from Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: Professor Harvey is Gone, a brand-new one-shot from creator Mike Mignola that hits shelves next month.
Written by Mignola, with letters by Clem Robins and art and colors by Giuseppe Manunta in his English-language comics debut, the one-shot comic takes a deep dive into the red demon’s past as he teams up with the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense after a paranoid antiquities professor goes missing. But when whoever kidnapped the professor sets their sights on Hellboy, things quickly take a turn, diving into his past like never before.
The exclusive preview gives audiences a special look at Manunta’s painterly art style, bringing Hellboy to life as he’s introduced to Professor Harvey’s assistant, Susan Smith. But things go south when hellboy discovers a mysterious artifact in the professor’s office — something that might point them towards their kidnappers.
“I’m a big fan of Giuseppe’s work so I was thrilled when he told me he wanted to do a Hellboy story—The only problem was that I had sort of (finally) run out of Hellboy stories. My head is so much in my new LANDS UNKNOWN series now that for a while I was really drawing a blank. ” says Mignola.
“Then I remembered a plot I had given to Chris Golden a while back. He wrote it up as a Hellboy story for Weird Tales magazine (THE CITY IN THE SEA—Weird Tales issue 367) but that was an unillustrated prose story and there were (I thought) some terrific visuals in that story so I thought Giuseppe would be a terrific artist to put those on paper. So I reworked that original story and idea and turned it over to Giuseppe to work his magic.”
Professor Harvey is Gone isn’t the only hellboy comic hitting shelves next month, though. Dark Horse is also releasing Hellboy in Love: The Art of Fire, featuring a story by Mignola and Christopher Golden with art by Alex Nieto, which takes the titular investigator to Iceland alongside archaeologist Anastasia Bransfield. The first issue hits shelves on August 6, and you can check out our exclusive cover reveal here.
