The end of the highest-grossing horror franchise to date is nigh, with today bringing the final trailer for The Conjuring: Last Rites, the ninth entry in James Wan and Peter Safran's The Conjuring universe, hitting theaters via Warner Bros. Pictures on September 5,

The Conjuring: Last Rites sees stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga return for the last time (apparently) as paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, this time investigating the infamous Smurl family haunting, which was said to have taken place from 1974 to 1989 in West Pittston, PA.

Rebecca Calder (Wrath of Man) and Elliot Cowan (Foundation) will star as Janet and Jack Smurl, with the rest of the family portrayed by Kรญla Lord Cassidy (Heather), Beau Gadsdon (Dawn), Tilly Walker (Carin), Molly Cartwright (Shannon), Peter Wight (Grandpa Smurl), and Kate Fahy (Grandma Smurl).

Michael Chaves (The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, The Nun II) directs the last in the mainline series from a screenplay by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing.

While The Conjuring: Last Rites marks the last outing for Wilson and Farmiga, there's still the The Conjuring television series in development that's being executive produced by Wan and Safran, as well as the previous implication from New Line's Richard Brenner that another “phase” of Conjuring films could be on the horizon (possibly that long-rumored the Crooked Man spinoff?) So don't give up hope just yet, Conjuring fans. Today's new trailer even teases the return of everyone's favorite freaky haunted doll, Annabelle.
